Preschool Gymnastics: A Fun and Foundational Start to Fitness At Rockstar Academy
19 Jun 2025

Preschool gymnastics is an exciting first step into the world of fitness and movement for little ones. At Rockstar Academy, our preschool gymnastics program is specially designed to introduce children to basic skills in a playful, supportive environment.

Preschool gymnastics helps develop coordination, balance, strength, and confidence at an early age.

In this article, we’ll share why parents should consider enrolling their children in a preschool gymnastics class, what key elements make up a strong program, and the fun activities that help build a solid foundation for a lifelong love of fitness.

Why Enroll Your Child in Preschool Gymnastics?

Preschool gymnastics offers a lot more than just fun and it’s a fantastic way for young kids to grow in many areas. Here are the key reasons why enrolling your child in gymnastics is a great idea:

1. Developing Gross Motor Skills

Gymnastics helps young children develop essential gross motor skills, such as running, jumping, and climbing, which are the foundation for physical development.

2. Improved Balance and Coordination

Through gymnastics, kids learn balance and coordination, which translate to success in other activities like sports and dance.

3. Enhanced Spatial Awareness

Gymnastics helps children understand where their bodies are in space which  improves their safety and ability to interact within a group setting.

4. Cognitive Growth

Gymnastics encourages kids to break down movements into small, deliberate steps, which helps with problem-solving and understanding complex ideas.

5. Exploring Spatial Concepts

Activities like mirror imagery and being upside down in gymnastics introduce children to important spatial concepts that will aid in later learning of subjects like geometry and art.

6. Social Skills Development

Gymnastics promotes teamwork, forming lines, waiting their turn, and showing politeness toward others, fostering a positive social environment.

7. Building Emotional Resilience

Kids learn persistence and understand that skills take time to master, helping them become more patient and motivated in the face of challenges.

What Are the Elements of Preschool Gymnastics?

Preschool gymnastics lessons work best when they follow a plan. Each class builds toward a larger goal, with smaller steps that help children progress. Here’s a look at the main elements that make up a typical preschool gymnastics lesson:

A. Lining Up and Attendance (Focusing Attention)

The class starts with lining up and taking attendance. This helps kids focus and prepare mentally for the lesson.

B. Warming Up and Getting Ready to Move

A proper warm-up is essential for preparing the body for activity. It gets kids ready to move and prevents injuries.

C. Introducing the Skill or Theme of the Day and Why It’s Important

Each class has a theme or skill for the day, whether it’s balancing on a beam or climbing a structure. The instructor explains why this skill is important and how it helps them grow stronger and more coordinated.

D. Development of the Skill (Learning and Practicing)

This is where the main action happens! Kids practice the skill or movement, building their strength, balance, and coordination step by step.

E. Exploring the Skill in New or Fun Ways

Once the basic skill is learned, it’s time to make it more exciting. This could include adding fun challenges, using music, or introducing games to keep kids engaged while reinforcing their learning.

F. Cooling Down and Reflecting Before Heading Home

At the end of the class, a cool-down helps the body relax. During this time, the instructor might ask the kids questions about what they learned and what they liked most. It’s also a time to prepare them for the next class.

Exciting Preschool Gymnastics Activities

Here are some exciting activities that can help your child build strength, balance, and coordination, all while having a great time:

1. Animal Walks

Animal Walks are a fun way to improve coordination and build strength. Preschoolers love pretending to be animals while working on their motor skills.

  • Bear Walk

Kids walk on their hands and feet with their hips up like a bear, building strength in their arms and legs.

  • Crab Walk

Kids sit on the floor, lift their hips, and walk on their hands and feet, helping to improve upper body strength and coordination.

  • Frog Jumps

Kids squat down low and jump forward like a frog, strengthening their legs and improving their balance.

  • Bunny Hops

Preschoolers hop around with their feet together, mimicking a bunny, which helps with coordination and lower body strength.

2. Log Rolls

Log rolls are simple but very effective for teaching body control and balance. Kids lie flat with arms extended overhead and roll sideways across the mat like a log.

Adding a soft wedge mat for extra fun can make it even more exciting. This activity helps develop core strength, body awareness, and coordination.

3. Balance Beam Basics

Walking on a balance beam is a favorite for preschoolers. Start with a low, wide beam or a tape line on the floor and have kids walk across with arms extended.

To increase the challenge, they can try walking backward, sideways, or tiptoeing. Adding props like scarves or soft toys for them to carry while balancing adds extra fun. This activity helps develop balance, focus, and coordination.

4. Obstacle Courses

Obstacle courses are a perfect way to engage preschoolers while developing multiple gymnastics skills. Set up stations with mats to crawl under, tunnels to go through, and cones to jump over.

Include balance beams, mini trampolines, and soft wedges to add variety. Obstacle courses promote coordination, agility, and teamwork, as kids take turns navigating the course.

5. Tuck, Pike, and Straddle Jumps

These basic gymnastics jumps build flexibility and strength. In the Tuck Jump, kids jump and bring their knees to their chest, landing softly.

In the Pike Jump, they reach for their toes while jumping, and in the Straddle Jump, they spread their legs wide while reaching for their toes.

You can turn this into a game of “Simon Says” to make it more fun. These jumps help improve strength, flexibility, and coordination.

6. Forward Rolls

Forward rolls are an exciting gymnastics skill that helps preschoolers develop coordination and spatial awareness. Have kids start in a squat position, place their hands on the floor, tuck their chin to their chest, and roll forward.

They should try to stand up without using their hands. Using a wedge mat for extra support makes this activity easier. Forward rolls build body awareness, balance, and coordination.

7. Jumping Stations

Jumping is a natural skill for preschoolers, and gymnastics classes provide a great setting for practicing it safely. Set up stations where kids can jump from mat to mat or over small obstacles like cones.

Use mini trampolines or springboards for added excitement. Encourage different types of jumps like Tuck Jumps, Star Jumps, or Frog Jumps. This activity helps improve strength, coordination, and spatial awareness.

8. Parachute Games

Parachute games are a fun way to wrap up a gymnastics class while working on teamwork. Kids gather around a large parachute and practice lifting it up and down together.

Add soft balls or foam shapes to toss into the parachute, keeping it in the air. For added fun, ask kids to run under the parachute while it’s lifted. Parachute games develop teamwork, coordination, and agility.
